Aldo Romani

Head of Sustainable Finance, Finance Directorate, EIB

Aldo is a first class honours graduate in Monetary and Financial Economics of Bocconi University, Milan.

In 2007, he shaped and executed the “Climate Awareness Bond (CAB)” with which EIB inaugurated the green bond market. In 2018, he extended the CAB-approach from climate change mitigation to other environmental and social objectives (first “Sustainability Awareness Bond” or SAB), tuning documentation to evolving EU legislation on sustainable finance.  CAB/SAB-issuance has grown from 7% to 44% of EIB’s yearly funding in the meantime.

With EUR 68bn of CAB/SAB in 22 currencies, EIB is the largest multilateral development bank issuer of GSS-bonds. It spearheads application of EU sustainable finance legislation in capital markets worldwide. Global Capital elected it to “Most Impressive Supranational Green/SRI Bond issuer“ in 2022 and 2021.

These results have won Aldo “Most impressive Green/SRI bond funding official” by Global Capital in 2015/16/17/19;  “Green Bond Personality of the Year” by Environmental Finance in 2018; and “Australasian Market Person of the Year” by Kanganews in 2022.
